Red Sails Over The Blackwater
The Thames Sailing Barge Trust are holding an exhibition entitled ‘Red Sails Over The Blackwater’, at the Maeldune Heritage Centre from the 8th to the 28th September. It will tell the history of the iconic Thames sailing barge, with their large red sails, which used to carry cargo along the river Blackwater to and from Maldon to London, and other East Anglian locations.
The exhibition will focus on the cargoes they carried and the people who built and operated them.
The exhibition is funded by the Heritage Lottery and is part of The Pudge Project which is restoring the sailing barge Pudge in Maldon. Pudge was a Dunkirk Little Ship, and built in 1922 by the London and Rochester Barge Co. in Kent.
Entrance to the exhibition is free and the Maeldune Heritage Centre is open from 11:00 – 16:00, Tuesday to Saturday.
